Anxiously Engaged in a Good Cause (Come Follow Me Lesson for Kids: Jun 2-8)

The Lord asks us to be “anxiously engaged in a good cause,” and He reminds us that we have agency (D&C 58:27-28)! It is an exciting thing for children when they first begin to discover the power that is in them to make good things happen all on their own!
This lesson can help your children learn that they are following Christ when they use their agency to do good, and they are capable of “bringing to pass much righteousness.”

Pass out a copy of the “Imagination Circle Challenge” to each person. Invite the children to use their imagination to think of something that the circle could be, and then draw it! (For example, if a child thought of a sun, they would draw sun rays around the circle to show that it is a sun.) Try to encourage each child to generate an idea on their own! If a child is having a difficult time with this, you could invite them to walk around the house on their own and look for things that are circles.
Once everyone has finished their drawings, have the children take turns sharing the drawings with the rest of the group and telling the group what they imagined!
Once you have completed the activity, discuss the following questions.
1) Did someone tell you what to draw? Or did you think of it all by yourself? (They thought of the ideas by themselves!)
2) Do you know what the word “imagination” means? (It means to think of an idea in your mind.)
3) Why do you think Heavenly Father wanted us to have an imagination? (Discuss.)
4) Do you think Heavenly Father wants us to use our imagination for good things or bad things?

Discuss the following questions after watching the video:
1) Why were the roly-polies waiting by the box? (They were waiting for the box to tell them what to do.)
2) Did the box help them do good things? (Yes!)
3) What happened when the roly-polies used their imagination? (They were able to do even more good things!)
4) What were some of the ideas that the roly-polies had? How many can you remember? (Discuss.)
5) How are we like the roly-polies? (We have an imagination! And Heavenly Father has given us the power to think of lots of good things to do!)
➤ S C R I P T U R E
Read the first part of D&C 58:27 and discuss the questions that follow.
27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause,
1) What does it mean to be “anxiously engaged?” (It means you really want to do something and you are trying hard to do it.)
2) What is a “good cause?” (It means something that is good.)
Read D&C 58:27 again, but this time read the entire verse. Then discuss the questions that follow.
27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;
1) What does it mean to do something of our “own free will?” (It means we are doing it because we want to, and not because someone is making us do it.)
2) What does it mean to “bring to pass much righteousness?” (It means using your imagination and working hard to make good things happen!)
28 For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.
1) Who has “power in them” to do good things? (We all do!)
2) What do you think that power is? (Imagination, creativity, hard work, faith.)
3) What does Heavenly Father want us to use that power for? (To do good things!)

Invite the children to color the scene from the video! As they are coloring, ask the children how many good things they can think of to do with their imagination. Invite them to write or draw their ideas on the back of the paper. You could also print extra copies of the “Imagination Circle Challenge” and invite them to think of more ideas for what the circle could be!
