Abraham and Lot experienced conflict when they both wanted the best land for their families. This situation could have caused serious division in their family for generations. Instead, one chose a peaceful and respectful solution, setting aside what he wanted and thinking about the long-term good.
This week's lesson teaches children how to handle conflict in our own families, how to avoid contention, and how to strengthen our relationships through unity and love.

Sprinkle a little pepper in the bowl on the water’s surface. Try to spread it around on the surface of
the water. Invite a child to touch the surface gently with a clean toothpick. (Nothing will happen.)
Now reveal the dish soap. Explain that the dish soap represents selfishness or unkind words. Invite the
child to dip the end of the toothpick in dish soap and touch the center of the water once again. The
pepper quickly scatters away from the soapy toothpick!
Explain: “When we use harsh words to try to get what we want, it pushes others away and makes the
situation worse (just like the soap pushed away all of the pepper). Conflict can happen sometimes.
Conflict is when two people want dierent things, have dierent ideas, or don’t understand each
other. When we face a conflict, we have a choice to make. We can try to make peace by finding a
solution, or we can try to get what we want by yelling or fighting! Today, we will learn about a time
when Abraham had a conflict with someone and he needed to make peace.”

Discuss the following questions after watching the video:
1. What was the conflict that Abraham and Lot had? (There wasn’t enough room for all of their
animals to live on the same land.)
2. What solution did they think of? (The solution was to go their separate ways.)
➤ S C R I P T U R E
Read the scriptures below and discuss the questions that follow.
9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand,
then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
1. How did Abraham and Lot decide who would get the best land? (Abraham was nice and he let Lot
choose first.)
2. Abraham probably wanted the good land too. Why do you think he let Lot choose first? (Because
he wanted to have peace with someone he loved more than he wanted the land.)
3. Do you think it is easier to solve conflicts when we love others? Why? (Because then we will think
about what they want, not just what we want.)
29 For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil,
who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with
another.
1. What is contention? (It means fighting against each other.)
2. Who wants to stir us up to contend and fight with each other? (The devil.)
3. Why do you think the devil wants us to contend and fight with each other? (Discuss.)
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love
one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
1. Who is speaking in this verse? (Jesus Christ.)
2. What does Jesus want us to do? (To love one another the way that He loves all of us.)
3. Why do you think Jesus Christ wants us to love one another? (Discuss.)
4. When it is hard to find a solution to a conflict, how can love help us? (When we love someone, we
want them to be happy, and we will think about what they want.)
