Repentance and Forgiveness (Come Follow Me Lesson for Kids: Aug 24-30)

When we sincerely repent and turn our hearts to Jesus Christ, we can become clean and purified through the power of His Atonement. Our Heavenly Father sent his son Jesus Christ to make it possible for us to return to his presence with a pure heart and clean hands.
Kids will learn about the miracle of the atonement, and how our lives can be blessed through the gift of repentance.

➤ P R E P A R A T I O N
You will need a small bowl of flour, a large bowl of water, and a towel.
➤ L E S S O N
Open the lesson with a song and a prayer.
🎶 O P E N I N G S O N G : “I Know That My Savior Loves Me”
➤ I N T R O D U C T I O N
Ask for a volunteer. Invite the volunteer to place their hands in the flour (so that their hands are
lightly coated with flour). Invite the volunteer to hold up their hands to show that their hands are
dirty. Next, invite the volunteer to reverently wash their hands in the bowl of water. Then have them
dry their hands with the towel. Invite the other children to take turns doing the same activity. After
you have completed the activity, discuss the following questions:
1. If we want to wash dishes, what do we use? (Water!)
2. If we want to wash our clothes, what do we use? (Water!)
3. If we want to wash our hair, what do we use? (Water!)
4. Can you think of some other things we can wash with water? (Discuss.)
Explain: “In the Gospel of Jesus Christ, water is a symbol. It reminds us that all of our sins can be
washed away by the atonement of Jesus Christ! If we choose to repent and have Faith in Jesus Christ,
He has the power to make us clean, just like the water can make our hands clean!”

Explain: “Now we are going to watch a story about a car who was feeling sad! See if you can find why
the car was feeling sad.”

Discuss the following questions after watching the video:
1. Why was the car feeling sad? (He wanted to be clean, but he couldn’t find a car wash that was strong enough to clean o the mud.)
2. Who do you think the car represents? (The car represents each one of us. When we choose not to keep God’s commandments, our hearts can feel like a car with dirt and mud on it.)
3. Who had enough power to clean the car at the end of the video? (The crane truck, and his very big car wash at the top of the hill!)
4. Who does the crane truck represent? (Jesus Christ! He has enough power to cleanse us and make our hearts new again!)
5. Does Jesus Christ stop loving us if we choose to break the commandments? (No, He always loves us! And he invites all to come unto Him to become clean!)
➤ S C R I P T U R E
Read the verses below and discuss the questions that follow.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
1. Who has the power to create a clean heart in us? (Jesus Christ!)
2. If we know we did something wrong, do you think Heavenly Father wants us to hide? Or do you
think He wants us to turn to Him and ask for His help? (He wants us to turn to Him and ask for His
help!)
14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great
tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
1. What does tribulation mean? (Tribulation is when we feel great suffering.)
2. Who has the power to give us relief when we are feeling tribulation? (The Lord has power to give us
relief and peace.)
3. If we are feeling tribulation from our sins, what can we do? (We can turn to the Lord, repent, and
ask Him to clean and heal our hearts.)
