As we ring in the new year, we will jump into the Old Testament. This important book of scripture can sometimes feel daunting to teach to young kids, but we want to help make the Old Testament approachable and fun to learn with your kids!
We hope this lesson will help your family get excited about studying the Old Testament this year!

Write a short, personal note to each child on a piece of paper and sign it. Place each note in an
envelope labeled with the child's name. If you have stamps, you may add one to each envelope to
make it feel more authentic. Have the envelopes ready to hand out at the start of the lesson. You will
also need a physical copy of the scriptures that includes the Old Testament.

Tell the children that you have a special letter that has arrived for each one of them! Hold up the
letters so the children can see their names on the front of the letters. Let them feel excited for a
moment as they anticipate what the letters might say. Pass out the letters and invite the children to
open them and read them (provide help reading the letters as needed).
Discuss the following questions after the children have all read their letters:
1. Were you excited to read your letter? (Discuss.)
2. Why were you excited? (Discuss the children’s answers.)
3. If Heavenly Father wrote you a letter, would you be excited to read that letter? (Discuss.)
4. If Heavenly Father wrote you a letter, what do you think He would want to tell you? (Discuss.)
Explain: “Did you know that Heavenly Father has written a letter to you? It’s true! There are many
important things Heavenly Father wants us to know. That’s why He gave us the scriptures!”
The scriptures are like a collection of personal letters from Him to us, His children! As we read the
Old Testament this year, remember: Heavenly Father gave us these scriptures to guide us and teach
us. These are the things that Heavenly Father wanted us to know.
