Death and Resurrection: Sept. 12th-18th

The promise that we will all live again gives such hope and joy. The Savior's resurrection made it possible for endings to become beginnings, and for death to be swallowed up. We will each rise again because of our Savior. This week's lesson invites each family member to study the beautiful doctrine of the resurrection.

Have a glove ready for each person to use as part of the introduction activity.

➤ I N T R O D U C T I O N A C T I V I T Y

Pass out a glove to each person and instruct them to place the glove in front of them on the floor. Say: “These gloves represent our bodies. Our bodies don’t work by themselves. There must be a spirit inside the body in order for the body to be alive.”

Instruct children to hold up their hands and wiggle their fingers.

Say: “Before we are born, our spirits are alive, but our spirits don’t have a body, just like your hand doesn’t have a glove right now. Do you know what happens when our spirit goes inside our body?”

Instruct children to put on their gloves and move their hands around.

Say: “Our body is alive now! We can move and play and work and do lots of things with our body! But, our bodies get old and they die. Do you know what happens when our body dies?”

Instruct children to take off their gloves and put them back on the floor.

Say: “When our body dies, our spirit is still alive. But, now our spirit doesn’t have a body any more. Do you know what resurrection means?”

Instruct children to put on their gloves again.

“Because of Jesus Christ’s atonement, we will all be resurrected! Resurrection is when our spirit and our body go back together again! And when we are resurrected, our bodies will be new again and our bodies won’t get old or die any more!”

Say: “Now we are going to watch a video about resurrection. We don’t have the power to resurrect ourselves. We need someone who does have the power! Let’s watch and see who has the power of resurrection!

Discuss the following questions after watching the video:

1) What is it called when our spirit and our body are separated? (Death.)

2) What is it called when our spirit and our body go back together again? (Resurrection.)

3) Who has the power of resurrection? (Jesus Christ.)

4) How many people will be resurrected? (Everyone will be resurrected because of Jesus Christ!)

➤ S C R I P T U R E

Invite children to listen carefully to the scriptures. Instruct them to remove their glove every time they hear the word “death” and to put the glove back on every time they hear the word “resurrection.”

[Read the first part of Isaiah 25:8]

He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces…

But behold, the bands of death shall be broken, and the Son reigneth, and hath power over the dead; therefore, he bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead.

And if Christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death that the grave should have no victory, and that death should have no sting, there could have been no resurrection.

But there is a resurrection, therefore the grave hath no victory, and the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ.

After reading the scripture verses, discuss the following questions:

1) Who will be resurrected? (Everyone!)

2) Who overcame death so that we could all be resurrected? (Jesus Christ.)

3) After we are resurrected, will our bodies die any more? (No, we will live forever and our bodies will not get sick any more!)

➤ A C T I V I T Y

Pass out a coloring page, on to each child. Color the children on the “physical bodies” page. Cut out all of the children (make sure to cut around the tabs on the spirit bodies page). Place the physical body over the spirit body to represent resurrection. Fold the tabs to attach. Separate the physical body from the spirit body to represent physical death.

➤ T E S T I M O N Y
