Commandments Are a Blessing (Come Follow Me Lesson for Kids: April 20-26)

God has given us the commandments to lead and guide us through mortality. Much like a road map helps us navigate roads, the commandments help us navigate this life. They keep us from pain and suffering and ultimately bless us!
Kids will see just how much love God has for his children and blessings he sends our way.

➤ P R E P A R A T I O N
You will need a cookie sheet, two cups, and a pitcher of water.
➤ L E S S O N
Open the lesson with a song and a prayer.
🎶 O P E N I N G S O N G : "As a Child of God"
➤ I N T R O D U C T I O N
Place the cookie sheet on the table to catch any spilled water. Set two cups on the cookie sheet, one
right side up and one upside down. Explain that the water represents God’s blessings. Slowly pour
water over both cups. The cup that’s open catches the water, but the one turned upside down doesn’t
receive anything.
Explain: “When we obey God’s commandments, we’re like the open cup—ready to receive His
blessings. But when we choose not to obey, we close ourselves off and miss the good things Heavenly
Father wants to give us and that He wants us to enjoy. Today, we are going to learn about obedience
and about why Heavenly Father gives us commandments.”

Explain: “Now we are going to watch a video about two boys who are building a jungle gym! One of the boys has the instructions, but the other boy doesn’t have any instructions! Let’s watch and see what happens…”

Discuss the following questions after watching the video:
What happened when the first boy followed the instructions? (He was able to build the jungle gym!)
What happened when the second boy didn’t have any instructions to follow? (He didn’t know what to do, and it was hard for him to build the jungle gym.)
Does Heavenly Father give us instructions while we are here on earth? (Yes!)
Where can we learn about Heavenly Father’s instructions for us? (In the scriptures.)
➤ S C R I P T U R E
Read the scriptures below and discuss the questions that follow.
[Read the first part of Exodus 19:8]
8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do.
Did these people choose to follow God’s commandments? (Yes.)
If we have God’s instructions and we don’t choose to follow them, what do you think will happen? (We won’t be able to have all of the happiness that God wants us to have.)
38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
Who is speaking in this verse? (Jesus Christ.)
Why do you think Jesus followed Heavenly Father’s commandments? (Discuss.)
14 Therefore blessed are ye if ye shall keep my commandments, which the Father hath commanded me that I should give unto you.
Who is speaking in this verse? (Jesus Christ.)
What will happen if we keep the commandments? (We will be blessed!)
What are some ways that keeping the commandments can be a blessing for us? (We will be able to feel God’s love for us, we will know what to do when we have choices to make, we can find the joy and happiness that God has planned for us.)
If someone doesn’t have God’s instructions, what can we do? (We can share the scriptures with others so they can learn about God’s instructions for us.)
