Commandments are a Blessing: April 18th-24th

God has given us commandments to lead and guide us through mortality. Much like a road map, commandments help us navigate, they keep us from pain and suffering and ultimately bless us!

➤ P R E P A R A T I O N

You will need a sheet of printer paper for each child for the intro activity.

➤ I N T R O D U C T I O N A C T I V I T Y

Pass out a sheet of paper to each child and invite them to fold a paper temple! Follow the instructions in the video: “How to Fold a Paper Temple!”

After the activity, discuss the following questions:

1) When we are doing new things, why is it helpful to have instructions? (They can help us to avoid mistakes and frustration.)

2) When you were making your paper temple, how did the instructions help you? (Discuss.)

3) If you didn’t have the instructions, do you think this would have been easier? Or more difficult? (Discuss.)

Explain: Living on this earth and having a body is something that is new for each of us! Did you know that Heavenly Father has given us some instructions we can follow while we are here so that we will know what to do when we have choices to make? Heavenly Father’s instructions are called commandments!

🎥 V I D E O : "The Brand New Jungle Gym | Commandments are a Blessing"

Say: “Now we are going to watch a video about two boys who are building a jungle gym! One of the boys has the instructions, but the other boy doesn’t have any instructions! Let’s watch and see what happens…”

Discuss the following questions after watching the video:

1) What happened when the first boy followed the instructions? (He was able to build the jungle gym!)

2) What happened when the second boy didn’t have any instructions to follow? (He didn’t know what to do, and it was hard for him to build the jungle gym.)

3) Does Heavenly Father give us instructions while we are here on earth? (Yes!)

4) Where can we learn about Heavenly Father’s instructions for us? (In the scriptures.)

➤ S C R I P T U R E

Read the scriptures below and discuss the questions that follow.

[Read the first part of Exodus 19:8]

2) If we have God’s instructions and we don’t choose to follow them, what do you think will happen? (We won’t be able to have all of the happiness that God wants us to have.)

[Read John 6:38]

For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

1) Who is speaking in this verse? (Jesus Christ.)

2) Why do you think Jesus followed Heavenly Father’s commandments? (Discuss.)

Therefore blessed are ye if ye shall keep my commandments, which the Father hath commanded me that I should give unto you.

1) Who is speaking in this verse? (Jesus Christ.)

2) What will happen if we keep the commandments? (We will be blessed!)

3) What are some ways that keeping the commandments can be a blessing for us? (We will be able to feel God’s love for us, we will know what to do when we have choices to make, we can find the joy and happiness that God has planned for us.)

4) If someone doesn’t have God’s instructions, what can we do? (We can share the scriptures with others so they can learn about God’s instructions for us.)
