Baptism (Come Follow Me Lesson for Kids: Jun 23-29)

During Jesus's ministry, he often used parables and symbols to teach his disciples important truths about the gospel. Understanding gospel symbols leads to new insights and deeper understanding.
This week’s lesson introduces children to the symbols of baptism. We hope it will invite a deeper appreciation for the special promises we make—and the amazing promises we receive—when we choose to follow Jesus Christ.

➤ L E S S O N
Open the lesson with a song and a prayer.
🎶 O P E N I N G S O N G : "Baptism"
➤ P R E P A R A T I O N
You will need a piece of green paper, a piece of red paper, two popsicle sticks and tape! Cut a tennis ball-sized circle from each sheet of paper and attach each circle to a popsicle stick. You are making signs that you can hold up to represent a green light and a red light. If you do not have popsicle sticks, you can also use pencils.
➤ I N T R O D U C T I O N
Play “Red Light, Green Light!” Invite the children to stand on one side of the room while a volunteer stands on the other side of the room with the two “traffic lights.” When the volunteer holds up the green light, participants may begin walking, but when the volunteer holds up the red light, they must stop. The goal is to reach the traffic lights! The first person to make it to the traffic lights gets to hold up the traffic lights for the next round!
Play until all the children have had a turn to hold the “traffic lights.”
Once you have completed the activity, discuss the following questions.
1) How did you know when to go? (The green light was showing!)
2) How did you know when to stop? (The red light was showing!)
3) How did you know what the colors mean? (Discuss.)
Explain: The green and red lights are symbols. Symbols can help us learn things and they can help us remember things. When Heavenly Father teaches us, He often uses symbols! Today we are going to learn about the symbols of baptism.

Discuss the following questions after watching the video:
1) Why do we wear white clothes when we are baptized? What does that symbol mean? (It represents being pure like Jesus Christ.)
2) Why do we get baptized in water? What does that symbol mean? (Because water is used to wash things, and it’s a symbol for being clean.)
3) Why do we go down under the water? What does that symbol mean? (It’s a symbol for when Jesus Christ was buried, and it is also a symbol for burying our old sins.)
4) When we come back out of the water, what does that remind us of? What does that symbol mean? (It’s a symbol of Christ’s resurrection, and it is also a symbol for being born again with a new heart.)
5) When we take the sacrament, what does the bread represent? What does that symbol mean? (It’s a symbol for the body of Jesus Christ.)
6) When we take the sacrament, what does the water represent? What does that symbol mean? (It’s a symbol for the blood of Jesus Christ.)
➤ S C R I P T U R E
Read the following scriptures and discuss the questions that follow.
27 And their children shall be baptized for the remission of their sins when eight years old, and receive the laying on of the hands.
1) Who was the Lord talking to in this verse? (To members of the church who had children!)
2) What did the Lord tell the parents to do? (To teach their children about baptism and to baptize them when they are eight years old.)
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
1) What was Jesus talking about when He said we must be born again? (He was teaching about baptism.)
2) When we are baptized, what is the symbol for being born again? (Coming back up out of the water is a symbol for being born again.)
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
1) Who was baptized in this verse? (Jesus Christ was baptized.)
2) When Jesus was coming up out of the water, what was that a symbol of? (It’s a symbol for being born again and for Jesus Christ’s resurrection.)
